Privacy Policy

What we collect, what we do not, and why the calculators and quizzes never send your numbers or answers anywhere.

Last updated

The short version

  • We do not ask you to create an account and we do not collect your name or email unless you contact us.
  • Everything you type into a calculator, and every quiz answer, stays on your device. None of it is transmitted, stored or logged.
  • We run our own aggregated analytics from this domain, and we also use Google Analytics. Neither asks for your name or email.
  • We do not sell data. There is nothing to sell.

Calculators, scanners and quizzes

Every calculator on What's On Wall Street runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Account sizes, prices, strikes and portfolio values are processed locally and never sent to any server. The scanners download a public data file and filter it in your browser; your filter settings are not sent anywhere. Quiz answers and scores are computed on your device and are not stored. You can verify all of this by opening your browser's developer tools and watching the network tab.

Information we collect automatically

Like almost all websites, our hosting provider records standard server logs containing IP address, browser type, the page requested and a timestamp. These are used for security and to diagnose faults, and are retained for a limited period.

We also run a small first-party analytics script, served from this domain, that records page views, referrers, approximate scroll depth and time on page in aggregate. It uses a random identifier stored in your browser so that repeat visits can be counted; it does not use third-party cookies, does not track you across other websites, and IP addresses are stored only as a salted hash. The country of the visit is derived from the request, not from any location permission.

Google Analytics

Alongside our own script we use Google Analytics, which is a Google product and works differently: the data goes to Google rather than to a server we run. It records the pages you view, roughly where in the world you are, your device and browser, and how you arrived. Google processes it under its own privacy policy. It sets two cookies on this domain, _ga and _ga_YQ35598M8S, each lasting two years and holding a random id used to tell a returning visitor from a new one. Through the feature Google calls enhanced measurement it also records scrolls, clicks on links that lead off the site, file downloads and site searches. If you would rather it did not run, Google publishes a browser opt-out add-on, and any content blocker will stop it.

Cookies and local storage

Your browser's local storage holds your light or dark theme choice and the random analytics identifier described above. Google Analytics sets its own cookies as well, described above, and those are the only cookies on the site. If we introduce advertising in future, advertising partners may set their own cookies; we will update this page and provide appropriate consent controls before that happens.

Information you give us

If you contact us, we receive whatever you choose to send, typically an email address and your message. We use it to reply and nothing else. We do not add you to a mailing list without your explicit request.

Third parties

The site is served through a content delivery network, which processes requests to deliver pages quickly and defend against abuse. Google Analytics, described above, receives the visit data listed there. Headline fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which receives a request for the font file when a page loads. The market data behind the scanners is fetched by our servers, not by your browser, so no data vendor sees your visit.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal data we hold about you. Since we hold almost none, in most cases the answer is that we have nothing on file beyond any email you sent us, which we will delete on request. Contact us through the contact page.

Changes

We will post any changes to this policy on this page with an updated date.
