How to read a heatmap

Look at the blocks before the tiles. If the whole map is one color, the move was about the market: a rate decision, a jobs report, a shock. If the map is split, with some sectors green and others red, the move was about rotation, and the question becomes where the money went and why.

Then switch periods. A sector that is red today and green over one month had a bad day inside a good run, which is normal. A sector that is red on every period is in a downtrend, and a single green day is not evidence of anything. The map is a way of asking the same question over several horizons quickly.

For what the sectors are and how they behave through the cycle read the sector ETF guide and macro regimes. For whether a broad move has participation behind it, see the breadth dashboard, and to filter the names inside any sector use the screener.

Frequently asked questions

What is a stock market heatmap?

A heatmap shows every stock in an index as a tile, grouped by sector, sized by importance and colored by its return over a period. Green tiles rose, red tiles fell, and the intensity of the color shows how much. It compresses 500 price changes into one picture you can read in seconds.

What determines the size of each tile?

Average daily dollar volume over the last 20 sessions, which is share volume multiplied by price. It is a proxy for how much money trades in the stock each day and tracks market capitalization closely for large companies. Tiles are grouped by GICS sector so you can compare sectors as blocks.

Why are the tiles not exactly the same as market cap weighting?

Because the data feed does not include market capitalization, the map uses dollar volume instead. Heavily traded names appear a little larger than their index weight and thinly traded names a little smaller, but the picture of where money moved is the same.

What does sector rotation mean?

Money leaving one group of sectors for another. When the heatmap shows technology and consumer discretionary red while utilities, staples and health care are green, investors are moving toward defensive sectors. The reverse pattern shows risk appetite returning. Switching the period to one month or year-to-date shows whether the rotation is a day or a trend.

How current is the heatmap?

It is built from the previous close and refreshed each trading day after the market closes. It is not a live intraday map. The as-of date is shown above the chart.
