Reading the dashboard
Start with the two moving-average gauges. When the share of stocks above the 200-day average is high and rising, most companies are in long-term uptrends and index gains have broad support. When the index is at a high but that share is falling, the index is being carried by fewer and fewer names. That divergence has preceded many of the sharper corrections, though it can persist for months.
Then check the day's advance-decline count against the index move. An index up 1% with more decliners than advancers is a large-cap rally, not a market rally. The reverse, an index flat or down while most stocks rise, often marks a rotation out of the biggest names into everything else.
The readings, defined
| Reading | What it counts | Typical extremes |
|---|---|---|
| Advancers / decliners | Stocks that closed up versus down on the session | More than 400 either way is a one-sided day |
| % above 200-day | Share of stocks closing above their 200-day simple moving average | Above 75% broad bull, below 25% broad bear |
| % above 50-day | Same, for the 50-day average; faster and noisier | Under 20% often marks a short-term washout |
| New highs / lows | Stocks that traded at a 52-week high or low during the session | Lows outnumbering highs in a rising index is a warning |
| Median RSI | The middle 14-day RSI reading across all stocks | Under 35 washed out, over 65 stretched |
| Market temperature | This site's composite of the four gauges above, 0 to 100 | A summary for quick reading; check the components |
For the theory behind these readings see moving averages, RSI and momentum and the Pro Desk guide to the VIX. To see which sectors are driving the numbers, open the heatmap; to find the individual stocks, use the screener. The yield curve page covers the bond market's read on the same day.
Frequently asked questions
What is market breadth?
Market breadth measures how many stocks are taking part in a move rather than how far the index moved. An index can rise because a handful of giant companies rose while most stocks fell. Breadth indicators such as the advance-decline count and the share of stocks above their 200-day average show whether a move has wide support.
Why does breadth matter if the index is going up?
Because cap-weighted indexes can be carried by a few very large stocks. Rallies with narrow breadth have historically been more fragile than rallies where most stocks participate, since the index depends on a small group continuing to perform. Breadth does not time turns, but it describes the quality of the trend.
What does the percentage of stocks above the 200-day average tell me?
It is the cleanest single measure of how many stocks are in long-term uptrends. Readings above 70% describe a broad bull market; readings below 30% describe a broad bear market. Readings in the middle with the index at highs are the classic sign of a narrowing market.
What is the market temperature score?
A composite this site computes from four breadth readings: the share of stocks above the 50-day and 200-day averages, the advance-decline ratio for the session, and the median RSI. It ranges from 0 to 100 and is a summary, not a signal. The components are all shown so you can see what is driving it.
