How the patterns are detected
Every stock's last three daily bars are tested against the rules below, using open, high, low and close. Body means the distance between open and close; range means high to low; the recent average body is the mean over the prior ten sessions. The prior trend is judged from the close five sessions earlier, so the same shape can be labelled a hammer (after a decline) or a hanging man (after an advance).

What does this candlestick scanner do?
It checks the last one to three daily candles of every S&P 500 stock against the rules for seventeen classic candlestick patterns, from a single doji to a three-candle morning star, and lists which stocks printed which pattern at the most recent close.
Are candlestick patterns reliable?
On their own, no. A hammer at a support level after a long decline means something; the same shape in the middle of a range means very little. The reliability figures that circulate online for individual patterns are unsourced and this site does not repeat them. Use the scanner to find candidates, then check the trend, the level and volume.
How does the scanner define each pattern?
With explicit arithmetic on open, high, low and close. A doji has a body under 8% of the range. A hammer has a lower wick at least twice the body and a small upper wick, after a decline. An engulfing candle has a body larger than the recent average that fully covers the prior body. The definitions are listed below each pattern.
Why is a pattern bullish on one stock and bearish on another?
Context. The same shape (small body, long lower wick) is a hammer after a decline and a hanging man after an advance. The scanner reads the prior five sessions to decide which label applies, which is why the two appear as separate patterns.
How current is the scan?
It runs on the previous close and refreshes each trading day. Patterns that formed today will appear tomorrow morning. The as-of date is shown at the top.
